simple bash if then (5 stars) more details

Have bash if then – trying to do error checking

someCommand; x=$?
if [[ $x!=0 ]]; then “someCommand failed”; fi

basically command and error check on the line following

ith set -x

on Success – we see “some diag details” that I do not want to see
on Failure – we still do not see the “echo statement” – as a result – we are not in control of the program

does that make sense ?

a further point is: this error checking does not make a difference, if we fail it exits anyway

the reason for this – is controlling the event of an error – does that make sense

any ideas?

this catches the problem; however, would like it to…
be on just 2 lines
exit at the error
if it passes – don’t print anything
