SharePoint 2019 on premises Apply Site Template

I am looking to apply a Communication type template to my Sharepoint 2019 on premises environment and I am not sure yet if I need a custom template or if a standard one will suffice. Additionally, I do need some customization to the existing template. I am open to suggestions, so if you have any ideas on how to best achieve this, please let me know.
