Close reading essay. I am writing about the play Fences by August Wilson. This is the prompt : Choose a “moment” or image, or convention that is crucial to what you believe the work (the literary object or performance piece) is about and the question(s) it poses to us as readers/spectators/artists/scholars. How does this moment (etc.) help to establish or create meaning(s)? How do you interpret it in relation to the performance of race and its social/cultural/political moment? Develop an essay that explicates your interpretation, your analysis in relation to the object’s overall action and form. I am choosing the moment of confrontation between Troy and his son Cory ( pages 84-89) and wanted to talk about ( body 1 ) black father/son dynamic, ( body 2 ) the effects of toxic masculity or precarious manhood and ( body 3) stereotypes about black fathers and effects on children.
Paper Requirements:
I will grade your paper based on both the quality of ideas AND your ability to convey them clearly. For more information, check out the paper rubric (attached) and make use of the writing tools provided in Modules – Writing as well as the USF writing center.
Length: Papers must be a minimum of 1650 words. Papers outside the length will be penalized; papers significantly below the word count will result in a grade reduction.
Use of evidence from the text or performance: Successful papers will use and analyze specific details from the text or performance to support ideas. For literary text, be sure to make textual references. For performances, be sure to describe “moments” for your reader.
Thesis statement: Papers must include a clear, concise thesis statement. Put your thesis statement in bold font and underline.
Citation style: You do not need to do any research for this paper. However, you will use quotes from the play and you may use other materials — you must cite those source (s). Use MLA Style Documentation (or Chicago Manual Style if you are familiar with it). You must include a Works Cited or Reference List.
