Welcome to Assignment #1: Art Spiegelman’s The Complete Maus (1996)

Please respond to BOTH prompts below with a combined minimum of 700 words. Each response, therefore, should be around 350 words.

Please include ONE (1) correctly formatted list of Works Cited references at the end of your overall response.

Both of the prompts involve doing some tracing. Tracing comics is a half-step towards drawing comics. The way I grade traced comics is based on engagement and is the same way I grade comics drawing. Please see this page for details about drawing comics in this course.

Prompt One: Themes of Maus

Draw a page of FOUR (4) traced images selected from across the whole span of The Complete Maus (Parts I and II) that are connected by a single theme or motif.

Add a commentary of about 350 words explaining the theme or motif within your four traced panels.

Include at least TWO (2) correctly formatted in-text citations in your response.

Prompt Two: Mauschwitz and Your Family

Trace ONE (1) panel from Maus “Part II: And Here My Troubles Began” accompanied by ONE (1) drawing that depicts YOUR family’s experiences around the same year in history as your traced panel.

Reflect on the similarities and differences between Vladek Spiegelman’s experiences and the experiences of your family member(s) with accompanying written commentary of about 350 words.

This prompts ask you to explore and present general information about your family. Please do not feel obligated to provide any more information than you are comfortable releasing to me and to your fellow students for the purely educational purposes of this course. Your responses will be visible to other students after you submit them. If you are not able or willing to write about your actual family ancestors, please feel free to make up a story based on researched independent and peer-reviewed historical facts about their country or countries of origin.

Here is a guide to finding good independent, peer-reviewed sources.

Include at least TWO (2) correctly formatted in-text citations in your written response.

ALL written responses must be in full sentences and paragraphs and MUST CONTAIN at least TWO (2) correctly-formatted in-text citations PER RESPONSE. Discussion #1 as a whole must contain a minimum of 700 words and FOUR (4) in-text citations.

Please remember to include ONE (1) correctly formatted list of Works Cited references at the end of your overall response.

Please study this valuable page to help you compose correct in-text citations and assemble a correct Works Cited page.

Remember that you submit your drawing by taking a picture of it on a smartphone and uploading it with the Canvas App.
Here are the Apple and Android versions.

Here is how to embed your image in your Discussion reply.

The grading rubric I will be using for ALL Discussions is this one by associate professor Mark C. Marino from the Writing Program at the University of Southern California. Your grade will be based content, voice, structure, style, and grammar of your responses as described in that rubric. You do not need to be concerned with the criteria of blogging convention or with the extra criteria added below the rubric grid.
