Both Plautus and Terence compose plays in the tradition of Greek New Comedy, drawing upon the same
stock of Greek originals for their inspiration. Both employ the same traditional plots and the same range of
generic characters. Yet the works that they produce differ in distinctive ways: in their approach to
characterization, the type of comic effects for which they aim, the themes on which they focus, and the type
of engagement that they demand from their respective audiences. Employing specific characters, scenes, or
themes from the works we have read, illustrate some feature of just how these two playwrights differ in their
approach to the genre and the types of effects for which they aim.
